THE FIRST DUTY OF LOVE IS TO LISTEN. – Paul Tillich
Recall for a moment the last time you felt you were really heard. What a gift it is when someone listens to you from the heart, with focused attendion, without any interruptions. When we can be fully present to another, the connection is increased and love is deepened. One of the richest gifts we have to offer others is our undivided attention. This practice has the power to transform relationships. Listen…and you will be heard.
For a moment, image a beautiful bridge. See this amazing bridge connecting your world with the world of your partner. Now, image yourself leaving your world and going over the bridge to visit the world of your partner. As you make this journey across the bridge, see yourself taking nothing with you. No desire to fix, to judge or to analysis. Once you arrive in your partner’s word, be curious about this world. You may find this world very different from your own. See yourself fully present to your partner. Let your loving gaze rest on whatever you find there. As you do, begin to sense that presence heals. Feel the deep connection.
